Thanksgiving beyond An Event

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, o most high: to shew forth thy loving-kindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night”. Psalm 92:1,2

Thanksgiving should not be an event in your life. When people take it as an event, they are overtaken by it so much that the preparation are more external than spiritual. People are overtaken with what they would wear for the service and with what they would cook for the service-the event of thanksgiving becomes much more important than the spirit of thanksgiving. Some people

may even stay away from church because they feel they don’t have anything to thank God for.

When you are controlled by the event you loose the essence of the service. The event is there for a purpose as a platform to come and express something to God . However , in your life that platform should be an every day thing. So we have to have an attitude of thanksgiving rather than looking for an event of thanksgiving. What happens when we see thanksgiving as an event?

a. We loose out on fulfilling the will of God. 2 Thess. 5:18.”In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”. When we see thanksgiving as an event we loose out on the reward of obedience, of seeing it has God’s will

b. We loose out on the object of Thanksgiving– God is the object of Thanksgiving. The psalmist say By my thanksgiving, I magnify God when we just do it as an event and are taken over by it and are concerned with how we appear for thanksgiving (it is good to not wear fine clothes) but it’s better you don’t dress properly and come with a fat envelope because you are saying something to God. The object of thanksgiving is God and after God it is other people. Why? Because God wants us to thank Him so other people will say He has blessed us. It is a mark of low spirituality when you are overtaken by the event to the point that you are more concerned about the external than spiritual or to the point that you say you don’t want people to say – you are pretending.

c. Every one that participates with the right spirit and comes to God, He ensures they come back next time with something more, you will not be diminished.

Thanksgiving is more than an event it is an outflow of the heart. So, come and offer thanksgiving to our God . For it is good to give thanks unto the Lord.
