The shield of faith

Eph 6:16
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

Faith here is symbolized as a shield, which is very instructive and encouraging. This is so because when Paul was penning this passage of the scripture he had before him in full view how a Roman soldier is dressed in their full armour.

The shield back then is not like the tiny ones we see in our books now. The Roman soldier’s shield is such that when it is held, it gives full covering to the soldier and does not leave any part of him exposed. So you
can understand the term ‘above all’, it gives an over all covering. This is also the reason all the fiery darts of the wicked will not touch you, they may be thrown at you, if your faith is in place.

You need to be persuaded about this, because there are believers who believe in win some lose some. No, a thousand and one times No! If you can quench ALL the fiery darts of the wicked, where is the win some, lose some in that? That is a win all situation. That is the NO weapon formed against you shall prosper situation.

So have this picture of your faith as a shield, the Roman soldier type of shield. Notice, the scripture says, for you to take it. It is your responsibility to hold it up. When you do, there is no need to fear, the enemy will not succeed.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Whom resist steadfast in the faith…” (1Peter 5:8,9)
